OpenWhispr is an open-source voice dictation app that types for you in any app that accepts text. Set a hotkey, start talking, and your words appear on screen with the ums and false starts tidied up. You can also give it spoken instructions like “clean this up” or “draft an email to Mike.” Privacy is the big selling point: speech models can run entirely on your own machine, even offline, or you can connect your own API keys if you prefer cloud transcription.
OpenWhispr can also record meetings and write up notes without a bot joining the call, and it supports 100+ languages with auto-detection. It works on macOS, Windows, Linux and iOS, and the free plan includes unlimited local dictation, a small weekly allowance of cloud transcription and a few hours of meeting recordings each month. The optional paid plans offer increased usage for cloud (non-local) transcription models.
